2025-01-04 19:19:07 +0000 UTCHappy New Year to you too, Rex! In my practice, men will often express immense shame and embarrassment when an unexpected erection occurs during a pelvic floor exam. We approach this situation in a respectful and compassionate manner often involving lots of education around the reasons why (or why not) something like this occurs. I offer to leave the room to allow the person to regroup and settle their nerves, or if they are ok to proceed with the exam, we proceed. In some cases like pain or scar tissue issues related to penile tissue health and function, a spontaneous erection can be diagnostic. Hope this helps clarify things for you!
