STAYC - Metamorphic Album Reaction
Added 2024-09-12 14:14:29 +0000 UTCI cannot believe it took me so long to get to this album! STAYC is one of my absolute favorite groups and I think I was slightly nervous I would like this? Went in with low expectations it blew them away. Really fantastic package front to back. This really does feel like a metamorphosis for them, just more of a stepping stone in that direction than a leap.

This is a strange one for me. I still don't care for Cheeky Icy Thang, and other than 1 Thing, the rest of the album has been pretty slow to grow on me too. Cheeky Icy Thang is just so droning, and the fact that they intentionally made it sound more robotic and AI-like (as per the recording behind) I think really took away from the song. Sales-wise, they dropped from ~400,000 copies of Teen Fresh and Teddy Bear to 115,000 copies of Metamorphic. There are a lot of factors including group sales generally being lower this year, but a 75% reduction in sales has to be causing some rethinking and retooling by BEP, especially with their new group coming closer to debut. I agree though that Sieun has been ready for an update to their concept for a while now. There were a few moments in the Bubble choreo where she pulls some facial expressions that have no business in a cheery song about forgetting your worries.

They said Rado wanted One Thing to be the title track, so it’s probably the other half of BEP that wanted Cheeky Icy Thang as the title track; perhaps because it’s more quirky. I actually like all the b-sides more than CIT, which also grew on me over time. Yeah, STAYC’s b-sides are so easy to listen on repeat because they have great melodies and instrumentals. Let Me Know is one of my fav because it sounds so heavenly beautiful, particularly Sieun and Seeun’s vocal. Fakin’ sounds amazing in the SoundBOMB 360, and Sumin and Yoon were perfect choice for this sentimental rock song. Isa’s vocal perfectly suits the R&B song Roses. I love Sumin’s cute swag in the rap verses of Nada. J’s vocal range really impresses in this album. Stay WITH Me is the ultimate fan song, and it’s particularly meaningful because the lyrics were written by the members. The Trouble Maker video was the MV of the Japanese release of Teddy Bear! I agree, you can’t help but smile watching STAYC perform and their music brings so much joy.
