Who wants some?

Bet you're glad you stuck around as a Team Beef Patron even though things had been a bit quiet of late?

Yes, as you probably guessed from the title and the video, Team Beef are proud to present RazeXR, a very W.I.P early build of the Raze engine (Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, Shadow Warrior, Redneck Rampage etc) for standalone virtual reality devices (Quest, Quest 2, Quest Pro and Pico 4).

Hmm, don't have time to play with myself.

This port is a little bit of an unexpected diversion; that under normal circumstances wouldn't even see the light of day for a long time, so we are proud to share with our patrons something of an early 2023 surprise.

Now, we imagine the question springing immediately to mind is along the lines of "What?!, this is great, sure I loved Duke Nukem 3D, but what about finishing Jedi Outcast and starting Jedi Academy?!", do not worry. I (DrBeef) needed a bit of a break from waving a light-saber about and fancied seeing what could be done with the Raze engine as a bit of a Christmas distraction (totally unbeknownst to BaggyG and Bummser as I wanted to surprise them with it too).. it turns out it works rather well.

The plan is to keep this port as a bit of a background tinkering project only accessible here on Patreon for now and to now go back to the Jedi Knight games and get JKQuest Outcast publicly released and get some builds of JKQuest Academy to you all.

It's time to kick ass and chew bubble gum... and I'm all outta gum.

Wait!, before you jump in.. some important things to note are:

a) this is still early, you'll see rendering glitches (we even know what is causing them, but haven't figured out how to sort them out)

b) things like the HUD need a lot of work, and..

c) it is face-aim only I'm afraid.. adding decoupled motion control aiming to this engine is not going to be trivial (it rarely is, but the other engines made it one hell of a lot easier than this is going to be)

However, considering the sort of game it is, and that decoupled aiming would mean waving a sprite about anyway, the face aim actually works very well for the time being.

Besides, invoking the nostalgia of unapologetic 90's macho sexism in glorious pixelated sprite and voxel form was all the excuses needed for an early release.

I'm gonna put the smack dab on your ass!

The controls differ from the other ports, since it is face-aim (for now) the controllers work more like a gamepad (so no left handed mode yet). There are some VR specific options in the menu (snap/smooth turn, height offset for seated play, HMD/Offhand direction for movement).

The full controls (based on Duke Nukem) are:

Right Controller

* A - Jump, or fly up using the jetpack, or swim upwards

* B - "use"  e.g. open doors, flick light switches, turn on the projector.. you know the one ;-)

* Trigger - Fire weapon

* Right Thumbstick click - Crouch, or fly down using the jetpack, or swim downwards

* Right Thumbstick left/right - Turning (snap or smooth)

* Right Thumbstick up/down - Switch weapons

* Right Grip + Right Thumbstick up/down - Cycle current inventory item (Jetpack, Holo-Duke etc)

Left Controller

* X - Use currently selected inventory item

* Y - Toggle Map

* Trigger - Alt Fire (for games that support it, not Duke Nukem 3D)

* Left Thumbstick - Movement

* Left Grip - Run

Heh, heh, heh... What a mess!

As for installation.. install the apk appropriate to your headset (Quest or Pico) using something like the SideQuest app (helpful tutorials for this can be found on the SideQuest website). Run the app RazeXR once so it creates the appropriate folders (and you can give it permissions). The you just need to copy the legally owned Duke Nukem 3D game file (Duke3D.grp, OR game files for which ever game you intend to play that is supported by Raze, the full list of games and their files required is here: https://zdoom.org/wiki/Raze#Supported_games ) to the following folder on your Quest:

\RazeXR\raze

Note: You can only have one game's files in the raze folder at a time, there's no way currently of choosing which game you wish to play otherwise, and it will always default to Duke Nukem 3D if it is there

The Duke Nukem 3D shareware file also works with this build and can be downloaded from the following location: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1THQK6QXzl3qBnXyy7edHk8qRnqfAKmPm/view?usp=sharing

Hail to the king, baby!

..and a huge thank-you to all our patrons for your continued support!

What are you waiting for? Christmas?!
