JKQuest Early Access Beta Release 0.1

The very first Early Access release of JKQuest (Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast) is here. Usually it would have been a lot longer before we got to this stage, but the other ports have helped expedite the development. There is still a lot to be done development wise, but we wanted to thank our Patrons for their early support by giving you a playable version. However being able to play the full game is still a little too rough around the edges, with game breaking bugs.

Therefore, to make things easier and get more focused feedback this Early Access version contains the official showcase demo mission where Kyle Katarn and Jan Ors investigate an Imperial Remnant base on Alzoc III, the Talz home planet. We feel this is a good introduction and also gives you a lightsaber  for you play around with from the start (whereas you don't get this until much later in the main Outcast game). This also has the added benefit of not having to copy files from your computer as the demo is contained within the apk, along with a few other nice mods that make it look a lot nicer.

Just install the attached APK via Sidequest and you are ready to go. When you first run it you need to (as with all the ports) allow it access to the storage. (I (DrBeef) had some trouble clicking on the allow button, but it worked fine for BaggyG and Bummser, so I am interested to know if anyone else has a problem.)

The (current) Controls are:

* A is jump

* B is alt-fire or throw lightsaber

* X is use current force power (this is very much work in progress)

* Y is being up the "datapad"

* Right stick up and down to cycle weapons (this is only temporary)

* Right stick click to use (i.e. unlock a door when you've got a key card)

* Left stick click to crouch (or roll if in 3rd person and moving)

* Right grip will slow time (this will be in future how you access the weapon/force/gadget selector)

* Left grip to two hand weapons - though this currently provides no tactical advantage, it feels cool

Hints and Tips

Laser beams tend to come at you around chest height, if you are intending on swatting them back.

The immersive cinematics are not enabled in this release, there is more work to be done before they are ready for prime-time and we didn't want to make anyone sick (or more sick than they might make themselves leaping about with a lightsaber).

You also can't skip some of the real-time rendered cinematic sequences (at the moment), so if you don't want to drive yourself mad re-watching them over and over, we suggest you save at the start of the game.

Also, please be aware that the demo ends with a lightsaber duel; and duels are not yet fine tuned for vr. They are quite a challenge in 1st person. If you find them too hard you can switch to 3rd person via menu options, however 3rd person mode is also not yet refined, so might end up being just as difficult!

Going forward...

We will be releasing incremental updates as development on the main game proceeds as well as bug fixes and changes based upon your feedback. We haven't yet started on our Team Beef Directors Cut, so this demo still has some of the problems highlighted in the previous Patreon post (small hit-boxes etc). You can also follow the development on the Trello board:

Obviously, this release is intended for our patrons only, please feel free to share any videos you might make playing this, but we do ask that the apk is not shared with anyone outside of this Patreon please.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and we hope you enjoy it as much as we have making it.

Any issues please shout!

Played and loved it. Noticed the Ultimate Weapons mod isn't in this build. Is that because it's the demo level or some other issue / decision? Btw, if it's because of the non-authentic-to-Star-Wars blood the mod adds, that can be easily removed by deleting the blood texture decals in the mod files.

It is actually possible to enable smooth locomotion. I'll put a post together with a few tips like that, as you aren't the first person to mention it. Grenade throwing is literally just hold the fire button to set the distance then release.. it's not true motion controlled throwing yet. Force powers aren't really accessible yet.. but that will be coming in a future update.

This is a tough one to comment on, without knowing what can be done or cannot by you folks, or that the game simply is not capable of something (not having played this game before). But here are my observations anyways (and some will reflect what you've already posted): - The current lack of smooth turning is causing me to do more physical turning. Not a bad thing to physically move, but I do like smooth turning more than snap turning. Snap turning made it disorientating at times when chasing Stormtroopers. - The reticules on the weapons seem intermittent at times, like as in seemingly disappearing, or not really tracking to where I am pointing. Either 'eyeballing' it or using some sort of iron sights is what I wound up using. - My force powers seemed to be limited to jump and saber throw. I can't recall being able to use anything else. - Weird how Imperial Officers seemed resistant to the saber throw, whereas Stormtroopers seemed to come apart at the seams. Maybe it was the angle I was at, but the first security officer took 2 to 3 tries with the saber throw before coming apart. - The worst part of playing was to keep referencing the post for what buttons had what functionality. When I gave up on referencing it, it took me a bit to figure out how to use the Security Card to open the door. Strangely enough, I couldn't seem to use the binoculars or bacta by comparison. - Throwing a grenade is weird and tricky. It looks like it sticks to your hand when throwing, and because of that, I've wound up throwing a few directly in front of myself. It's tough to figure out how far you can throw. -When fighting the sith dude, I'm currently at a loss of what to do. I can't tell if I'm effectively blocking, or if my strikes are doing anything. It feels like random swinging, and it's sheer luck if anything positive happens. - The graphics/VR implementation is very nice. A solid sense of immersion, and the music really added to the overall atmosphere. I'm glad to be part of the Patreon group, as I can now thank you folks for all of the previous joy provided (yay,half-life).

I don't have a pc, this was labeled as native to quest, I have a couple of file managers on my quest, so can download straight onto it. Can extract from zip but there's no internal APK. If you know what I mean?

Sidequest shouldn't be an issue for anyone with a PC and a USB connection to the Quest 2. Perhaps your computer is just recognising APK files as associated with a zip program but the core file is there and ready to be installed. There are other ways to sideload such as this: https://headjack.io/knowledge-base/how-to-easily-sideload-a-vr-app-to-oculus-quest-2/ (I've not tried it myself so can't speak as to whether it works well, but was the first result when I searched for an alternative). Alternatively if you could send us some pictures of how it looks when you try via SideQuest we can see what's going wrong. If you can't figure it out we can happily give you a refund and remove you as a patron.

If not, i'd like a refund.

can i install this another way? sidequest doesnt work for me and it downloads as a zip...

Try looking lower than you would expect.. I need to figure out how the hit box for the action isn't being triggered sometimes. There was a serious issue with it, but I resolved that, but it can still be problematic

Can't open the big door (i have the key, but nothing happens when i click right stick)

You need to alter the actual config file on your Quest (JKQuest/JK2/Base/openjksp_jo.cfg), so currently this isn't very user friendly. Ideally copy this file over to your PC, edit then copy back.

Where is this located? Which menu tab? Thanks

Ok i got it and it's amazing thank you so much

this download should be apk, not zip. If Sidequest said it installed successfully, are you definitely checking in the "Unknown Sources" section in your Quest? This won't appear in the normal apps list.

mrpapa

Is the whole file the apk because i did all that and the apk didn't install and do i leave it in zip format

assuming you're using the Windows version: 1. Make sure you did everything in instructions here for "Advanced Installer": https://sidequestvr.com/setup-howto 2. Connect your Quest to Sidequest via USB. Approve any prompts about allowing debugging from the PC you connected to. Should have a green status icon in the top left of Sidequest after connecting 3. In Sidequest's top toolbar find the icon that looks like a square with a downwards arrow. Click that 4. Browse to the apk you downloaded from here and select it. It installs 5. In the Quest, switch your app list filter to "Unknown Sources". Find it in the list and launch it!

mrpapa

I don't understand how to install the apk im using sidequest i need a install guide please

Whilst I've not tested it on this build, smooth turn is implemented already. If you edit the config and you set: vr_turn_mode to "1" (enables smooth turning) you can then set the vr_turn_angle to be how much you want it to turn each frame in degrees (divided by 9, so if you leave it set to 45, then it will turn you 5 degrees per frame).. you might need to play around to find numbers that work for you for that cvar, but ultimately, it should result in smooth turning.

Just played for about an hour straight and had alot of fun. Deflecting blaster bolts is really, really well done. What killed it for me, and this is just a personal quirk that's rare. Snap turning makes me sick. I can play smooth turning with no issues, but I had to go really slow. Makes sense that its the default and an early build though. That jedi fight was a freaking challenge. lol, I loved it though!

This is so greate, can' t wait for the real thing now :-)

I can't figure out how to switch force powers. No matter what the button does healing. Anyway, great work! And no kidding on the duel being hard. Had to cheese the guy with flechette secondary attack.
