If you watch the OG Z dub, just know the studio will alter his characterization early on to help the showβs success in the American market. Here is what Toriyama himself had to say: βThereβs how, basically, Son Goku from Dragon Ball doesnβt fight for the sake of others, but because he wants to fight against strong guys. So once Dragon Ball got animated, at any rate, Iβve always been dissatisfied with the βrighteous heroβ-type portrayal they gave him.
