If you watch the OG Z dub, just know the studio will alter his characterization early on to help the showโs success in the American market. Here is what Toriyama himself had to say: โThereโs how, basically, Son Goku from Dragon Ball doesnโt fight for the sake of others, but because he wants to fight against strong guys. So once Dragon Ball got animated, at any rate, Iโve always been dissatisfied with the โrighteous heroโ-type portrayal they gave him.
