I like FromSoft titles for the void. I don't know what it is about old, dying worlds with layers of defunct history and just a few other crazy people who don't spend a lot of time explaining their backstory...

Is this just a function of Patreon seeing this ahead of YouTube release, and the "now" referenced in the nebula spot is actually referring to the future date on which YouTube viewers will be watching it?

2025-03-08 18:11:43 +0000 UTCThe irony, I always think, of Nietzsche being used by right-wing political movements is that (as Abi notes), he very much wants *everyone* to try to be an *individual* - people following Nazism who *weren't* Hitler are also losers to Nietzsche (although not quite as much as people following Christianity, which he specifically hated), because it's the *following* that he thought was awful as much as the *type of thing* they were following. Nietzsche doesn't really want there to be a "society", ultimately - he wants an atomised set of individuals who are all actualising themselves (albeit he thinks certain types of people would be naturally better at that than others - ironically, he decided that the Polish were much better than the Germans at this in his "going mad" phase and insisted that he must be secretly Polish and that's why he was so great), and *any* ideological system is anathema to that. (Which is why, even though he despises Christianity, he does say he thinks *Christ* was pretty awesome - he created an entire new value system himself, stuck to it even though it got him killed, and expressed his Will to Power by turning it [mostly posthumously] into one of the most powerful religions in the world. )

2025-03-08 11:45:55 +0000 UTCI was put in mind of the importance of distinguishing between "explaining" and "excusing" reading the subtitles at the end. I'm autistic, and people (normally with power, and exclusively neurotypical) have said to me in the past, "don't give me excuses" when I'm explaining something (for example, why a colleague did something that would normally unacceptable) . There's a general autistic tendency to want to convey to people why things happened, to be understood, and powerful NTs seem to think that explaining things is avoiding taking responsibility. So I often have to be clear that I'm "explaining not excusing". I'm conscious that this echoes with some of what Abi was saying in this video about will to power, and in particular, some of what Vance says about leftist empathy disempowering people. Although, fascinatingly, those same powerful NT folks will also blame me for communication problems. So yes.

2025-03-08 05:48:49 +0000 UTCConcerning the discussion in the end credits' captions of the Trump-voting friend, I definitely had a visceral reaction to it due to the patriarchal-control bit, but IMO it didn't come across as endorsing it. I'm definitely at the point where Trump voting permanently taints someone to me, so that influences my response to that bit as well.

2025-03-08 01:51:44 +0000 UTCLoved it! In my twenties, I indeed had big trouble with the meaninglessness of it all vs the "thou shalt" attitude in religion which didn't make sense either. Has anyone ever read the book Contact, by Carl Sagan? He talked about "the life of ants". What is their meaning in life? In the end, I decided to set my goals this way: follow the realization of personal dreams and whishes, and also help and connect with others (which I indeed think of as partly egotistical).
