BTS pics: Nietzsche Double Episode

Hello lovely patrons!

We are back! Today we filmed two episodes back to back, a double episode about Friedrich Nietzsche. Rather than one massive episode I broke the topic up into two smaller episodes that'll release a few weeks apart to space things out. I also tried a slightly different format, which you'll see when you watch it.

Here are some pictures from the set!

Nietzsche was the philosopher who wrote Will to Power; you may know him as the guy who said "God is Dead" I think now is a good time to study him since his work is all about 'How did we get here, as a society?' How did things go so wrong? He's inspired a lot of very different interpretations as you can tell by the board behind me; I'll be constructing this vast web as we go! I drew a lot on Nietzsche's Genealogy of Morals, which is probably the intro text I'd recommend for first time readers too - it's easier than much of the rest of his work, though it's by no means clear I'll take you through some of his core concepts, including the will to power and the slave revolt in morality. We'll also be putting them in the context of the, ahem, politics of Nietzsche's day - especially his clash with the Anti Semites Our usual crew returned for this one and it was lovely to see their faces again!

Nicki Buglewicz did her usual magic with the hair and makeup!

Brian Conway returned as stylist, and he excelled as always! Our camera operator (who prefers to remain out of the spotlight) did a fantastic job on this one too. We tried a different format than what we usually do - you can't tell quite what it is from stills - and he really rolled with it and brought the episodes to life This is the look for the 2nd of the two videos, which uses Nietzsche's philosophy to explain the MAGA movement as a kind of living case study"Your TARDIS is quite immobilised Doctor, it's useless to resist!" For the format of the videos themselves I was inspired by Brian David Gilbert's work with Polygon. I'm interested in trying a video with practical props and illustrations like this, I hope it'll make things a bit more dynamic and interesting. The experience also deliberately mirrors what it's like to read Nietzche - it's not just a lecture, it's a wild ride! I hope you like this 'two smaller episodes' format, and I hope the YouTube algorithm likes it too - it's a bit of a risk switching things up but I want to experiment with making simpler content, for all the reasons I said in my end of year roundup post

Oh and speaking of the roundup post, I have booked a holiday for late February - my first in three years! I'll get to work and make sure the editing is done by then!

As a person living in the US right now, I can't decide if I'm looking forward to these videos or dreading them. 😅

Where is the new video I thought it would be here by now?!

George Frior

I'm curious to know if the almond croissant was a tribute to Peter Adamson or not :D

DDK

Great to see a new vid has dropped but I can’t figure out how to watch it (I don’t subscribe to Nebula and can’t find it on Youtube).

Martin Price

Looking great as always, looking forward to learning something new

George Frior

Nietzche didn't kill God. He pointed the finger of accusation at all of us.

FredShoey

Congrats on the absolutely well-deserved holiday!! Super excited to see this one! I do have to comb through all the past livestreams for hints about your tailor though, those suits rule

Nathan B. Wise

I love your hair! Looking forward to the eps :)

AC

You should definitely be the next incarnation of The Master! O:-) I bet he'd/she'd/they'd be a big fan of old Nietzche. Who knows? Nietzche might have been an incarnation of The Master too! "No, no! Übermensch doesn't mean over-man or super-man. It means Time Lord!"

RouxTheDay

They keep saying God isn't dead, but the movies with the title present a strong contrary argument in the fact that they were made and profitable

Unraveled: Nietzche

Lina Franzine Music

Yup, this is how you get my money. Say nice things about Nietzsche. I'd probably put you in my will if you ever did E.M. Cioran. It would be really cool to say more people properly exposed to him.

Contraryon

I was thinking that this set looked inspired by BDGs unraveled when you mentioned it in the post. I've been a fan of him for years, and it always just makes me happy when I see a creator I love inspired by another creator I love. I just feel like that "I know that reference" meme. I'm excited for these episodes!!

Lindsay

Looking forward to it! I've never actually tried to read Nietzsche so I'm looking forward to an introduction to his work by someone whose opinion and education on the topic I trust.
