Introducing Confex - Edit and manage your WM Configs
Added 2025-11-09 13:30:00 +0000 UTCConfex is a new way to manage window manager configs.
Confex uses its own .confex extension to display a GUI for a given configuration. This means KDL (the format used by Niri) is converted to Confex, which is then converted back to KDL when exporting. But it also means that KDL converted to Confex can be exported into other window-manager formats, making it easier to carry your config forward when you switch WMs.
There’s one small catch. At the moment, Confex only works with Niri. Adding support for other window managers is straightforward, though, because both the import and export processes are modular. For now, Confex serves as a simple, safe way for beginners to start experimenting with Niri configs.
Built on pure Material 3

I have refrained from importing NEX UI packages into Confex just to keep it as light-weight as possible. It looks simple and heavily focuses on functionality. The preview panel as well as the sidebar can also be resized according your need.
Select, drag, edit

The preview panel shows two rounded rectangles representing two different windows or tiles. You can select either one to edit properties like border width, corner radius, border color, and more. You can also select the gaps and adjust them using a simple slider.
When you are ready to expand, you can move over to the more advanced component editor in the bottom part. Just toggle the preview panel off from the view button in the top menu bar.
Add new components to experiment

or sub-components...

delete them, or reset them if you mess up

Bonus - Free simple waybar and niri configs + dedicated installer script - https://www.patreon.com/posts/sands-calm-and-143178553
Software is supported for x86_64 PCs running latest linux OS and libraries.
Tested on Fedora 43 Workstation.
Please note, comments are removed since they are not supported by Confex.
As of now, layout and animations are supported by confex.

Haha thanks for the idea. Everything is pretty basic here though.
