特徴を掴む（Understanding Features）

以前に、pixivリクエストにてこのようなご依頼を受けたことがあります。

I have previously received the following request via pixiv request.

依頼の内容としては、依頼者さん自身のオリジナルキャラクターを描いてほしい、というものでした。今回は、この依頼を受けた際に、どのようなことを考えながら描いたか、少し書いてみようと思います。

The request was to draw the client's own original character. In this article, I would like to write a little about what I was thinking when I received this request and how I drew it.

【資料を確認する（Check the reference materials）】

依頼者さんからキャラクターの資料として提示されたのはこちらの絵です。私は基本的に、こういった依頼で依頼者さん自身のキャラクターを描くときには、元のデザインにできるだけ近づけて描くことを心掛けています。ですが、今回は元のデザインが私自身の絵柄とかなり離れているため、今回は元のデザインを私自身の絵柄に落とし込むにあたり、かなりの変更が見込まれました。元のデザインの「特徴」をしっかりと掴み、それを踏まえて描く必要があります。

The client presented this drawing as a reference for the character. When I draw the client's own character for a commission like this, I generally try to draw the character as close to the original design as possible. However, in this case, the original design was quite far from my own design, so I had to make a lot of changes in order to incorporate the original design into my own design. It is necessary to have a clear understanding of the “ features” of the original design and draw accordingly.

【特徴を掴む（Understanding Features）】

特徴を掴むにあたっては、依頼者さんが同じキャラクターを描いた絵が他にないか確認し、「どこまで表現の幅が存在しているか」も確認しています。

In understanding the features, I check to see if the client has any other drawings of the same character and how far the range of expression may be.

依頼文には資料として載ってはいませんでしたが、依頼者さんが同じキャラクターを描いているこちらの絵なども参考にしています。

Although it was not listed as a reference in the request, I am also referring to this picture and others that the client has drawn of the same character.

・感情の見えない顔の女性

　A woman with an emotionless face

・赤と青、ツートンカラーの髪

　Red and blue, two-tone hair

・ピッチリとした短めの丈のスーツ

　Tight-fitting, short-length suits

・頭から繋がっている大きな得物

　Large weapon connected from the head

【デザインについて考察する（Consider the design）】

細身の女性が大きな得物を振り回すというギャップがとりわけ特徴的です。ピッチリとした短めの丈のスーツも、SFあるいは特撮もののような雰囲気で、原色に近い配色や黒の濃い影とマッチしていると感じます。個人的には、こうした短めの丈のスーツから太ももがチラリと見えると嬉しいので、センシティブにならない範囲で少しだけ強調してみることにします。

The gap between a slender woman wielding a large weapon is particularly distinctive. The short, tight-fitting suit also has a sci-fi or power rangers feel to it, matching the almost primary color scheme and the dark black shadows. Personally, I am happy to see a glimpse of a thigh in such a short suit, so I will emphasize it a little as long as it is not too sensitized.

【元のデザインの特徴を元にして描く（Drawing from original design features）】

髪が右に流れているのは、窓枠の横部分に立っているからなのです。背景のビル群と比べてみてみると、異様な立ち方をしているのが分かるかと思います。

Her hair is flowing to the right because she is standing on the side part of the window frame. If you compare it to the buildings in the background, you can see that she is standing in an odd way.

・黒の濃い影

　Dark black shadows

・ピッチリとした短めの丈のスーツ

　Tight-fitting, short-length suits

チラリと見える太もも。影の黒を少しだけ強くして、センシティブにならない範囲で強調しています。

A glimpse of the thigh. The black of the shadow is made a little stronger and emphasized to the extent that it does not become sensitized.

・頭から繋がっている大きな得物

　Large weapon connected from the head

画面手前に向けて大きく映し、大きな得物という要素をより強調しています。

The image is shown larger toward the front of the screen, emphasizing the element of a large weapon.

このような感じで、元の特徴を掴みつつ、自分の絵柄に落とし込み、自分の性癖なども加えつつ描きあがったものが冒頭で紹介した絵です。

The drawing shown at the beginning of this article was created by understanding the features of the original, incorporating them into my own design, and adding a few of my own favorite things to it.

依頼者さんの元の絵とはかなり異なる見た目になりましたが、それでも同じキャラクターとして認識してもらえるものになったのではないでしょうか。

Although the look of the drawing is now quite different from the client's original drawing, I still believe that I have created a drawing that is recognizable as the same character.
