For me, not a film but a series and not something that's really unheard of but one cinematic experience that has stuck with me since it came out and something I watch every year from beginning to end is Season 1 of True Detective. Its shot beautifully while being one of the darkest stories dealing with the worst kind of people. The writing and the duality of the two main characters as the story unfolds is some of the best character development Ive ever seen while somehow being sucked into still feeling relatable.
