Added 2024-10-25 11:46:40 +0000 UTCI literally cannot get the ending scene out of my end. Fck, this was just done so remarkably. The lessons taught, the lessons learned in this episode. Go Young's journey was truly bittersweet, beautiful and hurtful to watch... because he IS us. He is broken inside, but he can learn to love himself again. And that's because he already knows what love feels like, thanks to that one special person that came into his life, Gyu Ho... And he'll recognize the feeling when he does.
Go Young, our journey of life isn't over, you and me are 30 right now and there's so many more years ahead. We'll get there, and we will be okay again.

Thank you guys for your comments. My comment tried to do two things: 1.) Explaing the prep scenes in the last episode. I don't think they explained it well and confused some viewers. But it's good that they featured this as it's part of gay culture reality these days and helps against stigmatization. And it also adds to this interesting thailand as liberating getaway narrative. But 2.) My confusion. If I havn't missed anything (which happens), they left out the hiv treatment Go Young is presumably getting which if successful means he can't transmit hiv. This would have been debated in their relationship and changed Go Youngs view of his life. I know, drama is not about educating, but it's weird featuring prep whilst ignoring this. Adding to this, I saw a mydramalist comment that leaving out this question might also lead to Go Young as being seen as "morally dubious", when he surely had sex with different people and then says to Gyu Ho, that he is the first person to tell about kylie. the comment references the debate if a person has a duty to disclose his hiv status. Which i think the show tries to answer with him being shown as insisting on condoms. but the questions and answers would be different if he is in successful treatment with undetectable / untransmittable status. surely this could have been written better. U=U / Treatment As Prevention got more wider coverage in the second part of the last decade, so there might be a time overlap there. Although I'm pretty sure that this was established knowledge years earlier. Probably the book explains this and what characters feel and do better. Additional new 3.): Go Young pushing Gyu Ho away and "I tasted blood" when they first meet rings different on second viewing. I should add that apart from this the show was one the best I've ever seen.

2024-10-28 11:08:44 +0000 UTCNot quite on the final ep yet but this comment caught my eye and I did some research. Prep stands for pre exposure prophylaxis. In general terms, it could also be a vaccine for example. In this case, they’re probably talking about the drug Truvada. If you already have hiv, truvada alone isn’t enough to fight hiv. It got approved to combat hiv in the us in 2004. It got approved for prep in 2012. For Korea, looks like truvada has been used for hiv/aids but it wasn’t approved for prep until 2018. Which fits the timeline. The big thing though is like Kent said it’s expensive roughly $5000 a year. So there’s a lot of medical tourism and going to Thailand and getting it way cheaper. From a couple articles I’ve read, between 2010-2016 hiv rate has increased by 40%. Roughly every year, there’s a 1000 new cases of hiv. And the average age for new hiv cases are getting lower, meaning more younger men are getting it

I have watched all the episodes up to the 7th several times, but because I didn't want to let the series go I never watched the last episode because I wanted to watch it with you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for that. 🫂❤️

2024-10-25 18:37:04 +0000 UTCSo I think Prep may have been available to Korea in Go Young’s way later years, and also I’ve heard it was very expensive and not covered my insurance. Which could be huge factors. And another factor could still be the huge stigma about it in Korea and so who knows if they were afraid to buy it from Korea (plus the very expensive cost that comes along with it). The 1000baht is very cheap compared to what Korea would have charged

2024-10-25 16:02:25 +0000 UTCAbout those kylie scenes. the pharmacist is describing PrEP usage - pills taken by a hiv negative person (Gyu Ho, not Go Young!) to prevent infection (constantly or in planned usage before, during and after a period of potential need). i think thailand was quite early in offering prep as over the counter drug, with cheap generica as well. and people from all over the world use services like the pulse clinic in bkk with prep offers and hiv/std screening. Prep might not be (or might not have been) as easily and cheaply available in korea. The scenes shown in the series are a bit confusing: It might be that they planned this as part of their visit. It might also be that at the pharmacy Go Young wanted to get treatment medication and they heard about prep for the first time. Later on, Go Young seams to talk about how knowing something might have made the last years different. Prep is the same medicine as in hiv treatment, but in treatment it is given forever. it lowers the virus concentration until the virus is under the detection limit (but still there) and does not do any damage. If hiv-positive people reach this no detection point and keep taking their medication this also leads to them not being infectious - there are awareness campaigns around this idea of Treatment As Prevention. So this make the scenes more confusing. even without prep they might not have needed a condom, but might have decided on using it, just being extra careful or go young feeling insecure. maybe the book is clearer on this. it could also be that go young is not in therapy or that it is not working for him, but it usually does and should have been available to him right after diagnosis and I guess it would have been brought up if things went otherwise. Maybe there is a time overlap between writing of the book, (practical) prep availabiltity and the proven and widely accepted knowledge of Treatment As Prevention. I mean, speaking of time overlaps: Covid seems to be ignored.
