Sunny dolls is a Japanese custom, in which a doll made of white cloth or paper is hung on the windows/doors in hopes of a sunny day the next day. People usually draw smiley faces on it. Teru teru bozu' loosely translates to 'shiny (bald) monk', and are supposed to bring good weather, as the monk's head would shine when the sun comes out.
