I cannot with that mom. No one, even my hubs would ever be allowed to strike my child without bringing a She-Hulk mama bear outta me. That husband would be kicked outta the house for that alone. Hell no! But weak moms always support their abusive husband over their own children. What can be expected from her. Strong mothers have the sack to step in to shield their child. The sucky fact is that when your child starts randomly acting weird, the LAST thing you should ever do is force things. This sweet boy has never given his parents a worry before and rather than trying to figure out what is going on to see if there actually needs to be a concern, his mom just starts blaming and scolding. I'd lie too. I would not have told them the name of the friend. I would have lied every step of the way until they realized they needed to actually give a damn about me first.
