Abysm of Ages
Added 2025-09-13 23:58:09 +0000 UTCOf course, the most famous of these outdated depictions of prehistoric beasts is the first one: Iguanodon was discovered in 1822, and later canonized as an extinct species in 1825 by Gideon and Mary Ann Mantell, geologists at the time, and was the first dinosaur formally described by Western sciences. Naturally they got the majority of the anatomy wrong at first, but this changed as soon as 1878, with the discovery of an entire mine filled with near-complete specimens of the animal.
One of the many iconic statues at the Crystal Palace by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins is of this massive animal, the building of which have an interesting story all their own (more on that next time), and though they've had their share of weathering, they still stand to this day.
Here we follow a large bull Iguanodon into a tar pit as he's soon set upon by various critters, as happens.
