The point of having Nora tell the story instead of showing it is to leave it ambiguous whether it really happened or whether she actually backed out at the last minute and made that story up.

2018-08-01 21:57:26 +0000 UTCIn writing, it's bad form to "tell" instead of "show" and having Nora tell us about the crossing over and finding her family was one of the worst things in this show. It was full of unnecessary and inexplicable bullshit, but the crossover of earths was a solid explanation of the events. It's a shame that we wasted all the time on the bullshit instead of the story we could have had given this wonderful opportunity.

2018-07-31 05:44:44 +0000 UTCThis is such a good finale. The explanation for what happened with the Departure is so simple and poignant. (Hopefully someone found that baby from the first episode.) Both Kevin and Nora had to go through all of these crazy trials and tribulations just to figure out that what they needed was each other. I also loved the symbolism with the sacrificial goat being weighed down and trapped by everyone's sins and Nora takes on this momentary Jesus role just like Kevin did with his resurrections.

Almost everything up until now has been up for interpretation, so it's only fitting that the last episode would embrace the ambiguity entirely. I've gone back and forth about whether or not to believe Nora, but after almost a year of rewatching it each time a reactor does, I've come to the conclusion that she was probably telling the truth. Nora's always been the person to call people out for lying, including numerous times this episode where she says she doesn't lie, tries to catch Kevin in his lies, calls out the nun, and leaves the dance because "it isn't true." It seems like a bit of character assassination for her to then lie to Kevin in the last moments, even if it is to clean the slate. Plus, in this world where a Departure actually happened, it doesn't seem all that ridiculous that someone could artificially swap to wherever the rest went. Either way, though, it's a fantastic way to complete Nora's story of healing.

2018-07-31 05:33:17 +0000 UTCThe thing that I love about this episode is that it can be interpreted in so many different ways. You can take Nora's story at face value and assume that she really did go to the other side and back, or you can believe that she actually said 'stop' and made up the story to rationalize the experience, or (and I only thought of this just now) you could believe that all of this is happening after death as the only people we see are Nora (who might have been incinerated), Laurie (who might have drowned) and Kevin (who mentions having a heart attack). The brilliant thing is, no matter which one you choose, it works as a fitting closure to their story.
