He already had access to Jacob, in the cabin, in the beach by the statue whenever the Smoke Monster wanted. He looks like John Locke 'cause as potential leader of the Others Locke provokes envy and jealousy in Ben, and the Monster knew sooner or later he'd kill Locke. He got them off Island on purpose, to get Ben away from the mercenaries and Widmore, they knew where to get him now, and to make John more vulnerable and get him killed. Then, the Monster could manipulate Ben into killing Jacob for him, as we saw. Benjamin Linus was the Loophole. John Locke was the Sacrifice the Monster demanded.
