And that is why when Armin yelled she killed the "suicidal maniac" in Episode 17, it was huge indication for who the Female Titan may have been when she completely stopped in response. I don't know why they didn't include this in the anime from the manga, but the only ones who knew that was Eren's nickname were his classmates. Sure, we wouldn't have known it was Annie specifically just yet, but it certainly does narrow down the list of suspects.

Much of the love for Annie is after the fact, considering she hardly had any meaningful screen time besides one or two training montages. During the course of the show nothing leads us to believe Annie has a complex story. Even up to this point we just as confused as everyone else as to her motivations. This episode is probably the only time we see anything significant about Annie and her inner workings. For me, this is not a brilliant character, just a very mysterious one. A complex mystery maybe yes. Not more than that. I mean... to rewatch scenes to get value out of the character is not the best way to see how great a character is. Well, that's just how I see it.

Btw Jimmy, if you haven't already, I suggest you re-watch her scenes in earlier episodes (ep. 3, 4, and 16).

2018-03-12 01:07:46 +0000 UTCFinally! Finally I can come out and say this: my no.1 favorite character in this series is the beautiful, strong, powerful, mysterious Annie Leonhart, Female Titan. So much insight into her character this ep, but also equally so many questions raised. She hates the corrupt, respects those who against the flow, wishes for those who go with the flow (herself??) to be seen as human, etc. And yet. She's Female Titan, killed dozens. Here's this interesting tidbit from the writer: “Isayama explained that her laugh was an expression and release of her guilt, loneliness, and sadness. She’s laughing at the burden to having to be such a cold person to distance herself from people.” RIP my heart.
