I know you're already a few more episodes in, but you said here that the show is pretty bleak... that's true, but the consensus is that the show somewhat changes and isn't that depressing. While it's not going to take away anything from the drama, the show also becomes hilarious from time to time. Not in a comedy way... but you will see.

Trust me on this, the first few episodes are a feeling-out period, but by the end of season 1, you'll be lukewarm satisfied. Season 2 is when it hooks you, and then season 3 compels you. A lot of people seem to feel a similar way, so I guess it's worth noting that executive producer Mimi Leder took over seven episodes into season 1. That's around when the show's plot seemed to tighten, and it became considerably more engaging for it. Also, Damon Lindelof's a G. Season 1 is a faithful adaptation to the book, but the fact that seasons 2 and 3 are objectively better is just unfair.

Finally someone is reacting to The Leftovers !! I hope you stick with it for a bit because it does pick up and get really good . IMO.

When I watched this show as it aired, I remember how powerfully it effected my emotions. You will love characters, hate them, find them annoying, wish they were dead, wish they were alive, etc. It's a 100% effort show. It IS depressing, particularly in the first season. I remember in this first episode, hating the rifle guy when he shot the dog, hating all the Guilty Remnant people... but then when they were getting their asses kicked by everyone throughout... I hated the people doing the ass kicking. IMO, Season 1 has a few 9-10/10 episodes. Season 2 is where it becomes brilliant and LOSTian in its WTF scale. By the way, it should be noted to Jimmy, season 1 is based on a book called "The Leftovers." At season 2 and 3, it's original and from the mind of Mr. Lindelof.

I disagree. It’s very impressive. The acting in this show is some of the best. I’m sure he’ll react to BSG eventually.

Although I didn't find the show horrible, it's quite unimpressive. I am shocked that people were so interested in seeing you react to it. I'd far prefer BSG, and you will too.

Watching this along with you. It was pretty good, but I would normally drop it. I'll stick to it, as it is Damon Lindelof, I've heard it gets really good in S2/S3 and you're reacting to it.

I also voted BSG because I wasn't sure that you would really get into this show. It IS depressing-- the music makes me cry almost every time I hear it-- but beautiful, especially in later seasons. It's a great show, I just think BSG would be more fun for you to react to. So I'm hoping you power through this fast and get to BSG next!

This show is definitely comparable to lost in that it is very character centric. It differs from lost in its marketing in that when lost was on ABC kept on saying the answers are coming but this show is more about how people deal with the unexplainable and as audience members we aren’t really given much more information than what the characters are given. The point of the show is in no way to explain the reason why 2% of the world the world disappeared but to rather explore how individuals and society would react as a whole

"AoT tomorrow..." (!!) I've been counting down the days to ep17. Anyway I keep seeing other patrons comment that this is a Damon Lindelof show and that it's comparable to Lost...Well I'm sold. Gonna start watching this on spring break.

Without spoiling anything, I will say the show seriously levels up when they start recreating the Lost 'character-centric' episode format (103 and 106 hint at the greatness of seasons 2-3 in that regard).

I really hope you choose to stick with this one, Jimmy. Season one is kinda slow and depressing, but seasons 2 and 3 go off into some delightfully strange directions and make the whole thing absolutely worth it.

I voted for BSG in your poll cuz I honestly wondered if this was up your alley, just like you did in this pilot reaction. That said, I think you will dig it if you can power through the first half of season 1. The ways in which it's a spiritual sequel to Lost become much more effective in s2&3 (and in the back half of s1, at least for me).
