I think this is one the top, if not the most important scene for Ben in regards to his character development, not taking into account the badass moments. Ben shows true and sincere remorse for killing. Saying he was sorry for killing Locke before burying him was not as heartfelt as when he said "I'll miss you John. I really will." Here it was a true remorse for the things he did. And Illyana forgave Ben to allow him the chance to join the good guys, unlike with Sayid who could not forgive himself and people tried to kill him and shun him. Illyana gave Benjamin a chance for redemption, to save himself, instead of executing him, or instead of Ben joining notLocke. As for Jacob there are still many things to consider as to why he didn't "care" like Ben said, to be killed.

Images and mentions of Black Rock make recurring appearances throughout the series in the most unexpected places, and it's not until later this season do you realize why :) P.S.
