Lost REACTION - 6x15

Lost REACTION - 6x15

Another important thing to note. Dead people are not always the Smoke monster as we saw his real dead mother speak to him. When Jack asks fake Locke if he ever looked like Christian, the monster hesitates a split second. Great fucking acting by Terry O'Quinn, rewatch it. The man in black can't leave the island, and yet Christian appears to Jack in the hospital, like other dead people and Claire appear to the Oceanic 6. The Christian in the hospital is wearing WHITE tennis shoes, like the Christian that led Jack to water, like the Christian that appears in the season 4 mobisode with Vincent to foreshadow his importance in that upcoming season, the white tennis shoes Jack buried him in and it was all made such a big deal later on. The Christian in the cabin, the Christian that appears to Sun and Frank when you hear the rattling of the black smoke and the whispers, the Christian that appears to Michael, the Christian that tells Locke to die. That Christian is wearing BOOTS. Look at how the camera focuses on the boots when they introduce Christian in the cabin.

I think the main lesson of the episode is in fact supposed to be that both Jacob and his brother aren’t just the mythical figures we’ve seen for 6 years — they are, or at least were, just people caught in an unfortunate situation. You should resent the weakness Jacob displays here and you should sympathize with a child’s desire to leave the confines of his small neighborhood and go see the world. Jacob was the less favored child of only two on the whole island, forced to take a throne he did not understand or particularly desire. This episode wants you to see Jacob in all his human non-glory, and to see the smoke monster as a person. The lesson really is what you caught: these are not gods, these are just powerful people with their own motives and their own sets of issues, just like everyone else on the island.

“Fuck Jacob!”...the great Jimmy Macram 😂😂😂 I love it! And I felt the same way about him jimmy, you said all of the thoughts I had the first time I saw this 😄

I remember there wà a theory at the time it aired, that when Jack opens a casket in season one he isn't surprised cause his dad's body is missing but because it's dead Locke.

I like this episode but I think a lot of people hated it because of the timing. People weren't feeling a Jacob/ MiB episode right after losing 3 main characters.

Yeah, you can think of it as an avatar. Jacob gave whatever spirit of the island a form to take.

Erich Bomke

Its funny how much Black and White themes are in this show considering everything and everyone is shown that there is no TRUE black or white.

Erich Bomke

#fuckjacob

Can't wait for the next few episodes, and the finale which I still don't understand after watching 4 times lol . But still loved it .

I once read an amazing theory that the black smoke is an evil demon that Jacob freed when he threw him in there essentially killing his brother. The black smoke is not the same person as the MiB (human form) like how the smoke is not locke. It just happens that their views are the same, they both wanted to leave. Only thing that throws me off is MiB says to Jacob he stole his body. Its possible that the demon and the human fused or something.

One of the things I realised about this show, is that the viewers are part of the story. The viewers constantly engage in a battle of answers and whose right and wrong, questioning what the purpose is and that some believe there is and some believe there isn't. This is much like real life, there is nobody who actually knows what's really going on and you only have your path and theory. So much like Jack, your supposed to let go into accepting that life is a mystery and while you may have your theory, you embrace the unknown and go forward and do what youre going to do anyway. I mean look at this comments section "They come, they fight, they destroy, they corrupt, it always ends the same" lol. So I feel quite confident that the Writers just sit back, sip their coffee and watch as the viewers prove the man in black correct... I, as a man who embraces many creative opportunities, think that that is quite amazing.

Daniel Gray

the look on your face when you saw the bright light for the first time, I straight burst out laughing

Season 6 as a whole is bad, but this episode is on a whole different level of awful. Forced and nonsensical "answers" to the questions that never should have been answered in the first place. Never cared about Jacob (who was piece of s*it, by the way), cared even less about the other guy who they didn't even bother to give a name to. Introducing those two characters was the biggest mistake creators of Lost ever made - they didn't fit, they were forced into the story and then the story butchered to suit fitting them.

Yes, this is the magic box.

Daniel Gray

I wrote a nice lengthy comment and it's gone, wth ):

That is the beauty, and the best on this show! ITS AMBIGUITY... everyone is free to especulate, and no answer is absolutely right, neither absolutely wrong, especially about the moral behavior of the characters, including Jacob and MiB. The episode has its problems, that is right... but not with the 'answers thing'. Not at all! Anyone smart enough would have realized that, at least when we got the "frozen donkey wheel" device to move the island - i would argue that before of that it was pretty much clear -, THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A FANTASY SHOW, not a SCI-FI one... That is just so f***ing clear! And also... Why do people get so attached to the good/evil duality, needing it to be so well defined, when, in the real world, that is not even close what what happens?

hasp

I strongly dislike this episode. That being said, I 100% agree with Jimmy about Jacob. Would’ve been more interesting if he was actually the villain but that would’ve taken a bit more cajones to pull off. Ah well, great show still.

Mike

I'm on the side that really liked this episode, despite the terrible child actors (makes you appreciate GoT even more for the 100% perfect casting of the Stark kids).

outdoorcats

I love this episode, The answers worked for me. I don't care where the Mother came from ect, it's not important to the story being told.

PhillyJ

16 and 17 tomorrow with 18 probably on Monday.

Jimmy Macram

You are wrong. The writers 100% intened for you to feel bad for MiB. Why do you think they had him take over the body of a liked charachter? So we would feel for him even more. On the surface your suposed to think jacob is this great god, but as you watch you should realize jacobs not a great guy, just like jimmy did. You say mother is a paper thin charachter, but this episode reveals alot about her. Shes exactly like jacob, and that should be enough for you to know what shes like. She/jacob are both manipulative, selfish, and controlling. Jacob changed the course of countless peoples lives over a dispute with his brother and to find someone suitable to be a replacement for him, the same way his mother groomed MiB to be her replacement, even though jacob took it instead. On the others, They were created to protect the island. this "cult" as you say killed people who would be threats the the island, hints why they wiped out dharma. Its clear that ben hijacked the others goals of protectorship in order to do his own thing. He "terrorized" jacobs candidates because he needed jack to operate on him, some people believe he got cancer because he wasnt doing what jacob would want, as Richard said the others were dealing with fertility stuff when there are bigger problems. So its clear ben didnt 100% listen to jacob/richard. Meanwhile its also reasonable to think ben took orders from MiB claiming to be jacob. This is also why jacob himself decided to intervene in the end, hands off aspect he had wasnt working, ben took over the others, the candidates started dying, MiB was about to leave, and jacob was dead and runing out of time(also arguable that jacob being alive also prevent MiB from seeing the cave, once jacob was dead MiB was able to find it in the end thats why he always needed a protector). This cave thing i geuss was thrown in but at this point its not implausible, its just a microcosm of the island. The whole show they say the island needs protecting and youd ask why? This is the reaveal of why it needs protecting. Thats an answer and you just dont like the answer so you think its dumb. Its really not that dumb. The whole show has lead to this answer of what is it that needs protection. Also on why cant MiB leave, you're right, it was selfish of mother not wanting him to leave cause she loved him, thats kind of why he killed her dude. But now thst jacob ruined his life and hes a smoke monster, he REALLY shouldnt leave. Thats a good reason for him not to leave since hes basicaly a devil, also as mother said if the light goes out here it goes out everywhere, in order for smokey to leave he has to put the light out so obviously he has to stay. Like i said in the beginning, you arent supposed to be against the MiB all the way, your not supposed to be for jacob all the way. I get that you have this opinion and its ok for yoh to have tht opinion, but alot of what you said is 100% explainable.

Will the finale be this weekend or next?

YouTube varies. Lost on patreon is over the weekend... But that's about over now.... So... 😒

Jimmy Macram

Sorry if this is a stupid question but do you have a set schedule for your YouTube and Patreon? Or are you just making your videos whenever you can? I don't have a problem either way I just wanted to know. Thanks.

And the fans just disliked this episode 'cause it wasn't science-based answers, but "magic." Even though LOST was always supernatural and faith based. And in the words of Arthur C. Clarke's third adage, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." You know what, even God, if he did exist, would be explainable by science, a very advanced science, a complete, total understanding of reality... May LOST live forever, three cheers, and ever. Hats off.

David Caine

Every question I answer will just lead to another question. Especially THESE questions. And remember Ben's comment to Locke about a very large box somewhere on the Island, and whatever you imagined, whatever you desired, there it would be. The light is life, death, rebirth, or rather a certain level of consciousness that manifests reality.

David Caine

This episode is where a lot of long time fans started to give up on the show adequately resolving long standing mysteries. This was supposed to be the episode where we could finally get some solid clear answers.. and for once spare us the super vague bullshit non-answers. But nah, in one of the big final episodes, after 6 years, it still adds more vague bullshit to the colossal pile. We get a paper thin mystery character 'Mother' thrown in with zero information or backstory, even though she's so important and basically caused the whole story of Lost to occur, we learn basically nothing about her. Suddenly there's a light in a magic cave tacked on to the story.. If the whole point of being the island's protector is to keep this cave safe, why did Jacob basically create a cult on the island (the others) that had nothing to do with protecting the cave? The others' actions working under Jacob are absolutely ridiculous as well, considering they terrorized and killed his own 'candidates' that he spent 40+ years carefully bringing to the island.. Oh, and to top it off, it seems that only the island's protector is even capable of finding this magic cave! The MIB can't locate it after thousands of years on the island.. so what was even at risk? what made Jacob need to bring outsiders to the island to help him? This entire conflict is sort of a joke - It only exists because Jacob brought unnecessary people to the island to protect a cave that was impossible to find and then he LET someone kill him. Then, with the MIB.. from what we see he's just a regular guy.. he isn't shown to be "evil" whatsoever. We still haven't got a good reason why he can't leave the damn island, and if anything, this episode made it seem EVEN more nonsensical that he wasn't allowed to leave. Everything revolves around stopping him from leaving the island.. the ENTIRE season. So, as 'Mother' is dying he asks her why the hell he cant leave.. her response is: "because I love you." Wow! Keep in mind he had NO powers at this time, just a regular guy. Never, not once a logical reason for him to be held in captivity other than that the crazy 'Mother' LOVES him too much to let him go. Wow! Then Jacob, the supposed good guy, is revealed to be completely responsible for making him turn into the smoke monster. So now, Jacob is just following the footsteps of his crazy fake mother, by not letting MIB leave, because MIB is supposedly evil, and a smoke monster, which was caused directly by Jacob. And we're supposed to side with Jacob. The man in black is the only one who's actions make any sense.. he's just a victim. From everything we are shown he is completely innocent. Jacob and Mother basically ruined this innocent man's life for no reason. And he's supposed to be the evil villain? ..we're supposed to think he's a monster? It's a bad sign when you're rooting for the "bad guy" completely against the writers' intentions. At least it ends with them solving a mystery from Season 1 about the 2 bodies found in the caves. Oh wait.. that completely fails too. The bodies in the caves still had clothing on them, and were supposed to be 40-50 years old. These characters were supposed to be 2000+ years old. Really shows how they had it carefully planned out all along.. dammit writers! Sorry to be so negative, it's just disappointing when so much story leads up to nothing meaningful (imo), and they try to act like everything had a grand plan. Just my opinion. this got too long lol.

I was ambivalent over this episode. I didn't like how certain things were executed, so to speak, not necessarily storywise. BUT, I rewatched it last week in anticipation of Jimmy's reaction. I loved it. The details of the episode, the way it turned out seemed much more fitting considering an overall analysis of the series. When you realize that the Mother manipulated everything, even when things did not turned out like she exactly wanted it, she still found her release of responsibility. Remember that Juliet was reading Carrie for her home book club when she was first introduced? Maybe that's how this Protector destroyed everything there at the end, or maybe since the Protectors seem to have the power of the Greek Fates they can choose when someone can die or not, and she just decided to end the life of all people on the Island at the time, when they no longer suited her purpose, to drive the man in black to kill her. And the most important thing out of this episode, Jacob and the man in black are just people, not gods or demons.

David Caine

This was probably one of my favorite episodes of the series, and really made me feel bad for The Man in Black.

My interpretation is/was that the light "violently" seperated his soul from his body, which is the fate that is worse than death. So I think that the smoke monster is the soul of the MIB. But there are also valid interpretations, that smokey is an evil force that always lived in the heart of the island, which needed a physical body to get free. When I first watched this episode I really didn’t like it because I was very disappointed that after all this time I found out that even Jacob has no really idea about what is going on and he just did as he was told. But we also do not know what happened between his protector-ritual and the present, so maybe he found out alot about the island and the light. Another thing I did not like was that the great secret of the island was a golden light in a cave, which didn’t feel very creative to me. But nowadays I am okay with this episode.

I also had similar thoughts about that, but your post explains it pretty good.

Personally, I love this episode. A lot of people outright hate it. So like it, but hate the placement of it (3 before the finale). I think it's great for what it is. Jimmy asked, "I thought this was the bad guy; why do they make me feel bad for this guy?" That's one of the reasons this show is my favorite. The characters all tend to some semblance of decency in them, at some point. As a hopeful person, I can appreciate this. However, clearly some are better or worse than others. As I had commented once before, they do a good job of setting the idea that Jacbob vs MIB is Jesus/God vs Satan. But really, these are flawed people and Jacob is nowhere close to sin-free, and MIB is nowhere near completely evil. Ultimately, he took down his mother's murderer. A great episode and a great reaction Jimmy! I love the reveal of the smoke monster.

Retap Maxsor

Right after. I'm glad they didn't include that scene in the actual finale though, I find it a little too convenient lol

Wow I never thought about it :)

The MIB is awesome. That being said, I think this episode is just OK, skipped it last times I watched season 6, actually.

I wish we saw more of a reaction to 1. The Source reveal, life, death, rebirth etc. Critical scene and... Nothing. 2. The metal behaves strangely scene. Clear references to the electromagnetic energy that has been on going since forever. 3. The reveal that the MiB created the frozen donkey wheel that moves the island. 4. The scene of pure rage from MiB.

Daniel Gray

At the beginning of season 6 Locke says to Jack: "they didn't lose your father, they just lost his body". Well the man in black didn't die, he just lost his body.

Daniel Gray

A lot of fans hated this episode but it was an important information dump. It finally answers many of the important questions of the series... and you're right it makes the MIB a tragic figure... you really feel for him.

On the topic of Jacob's defense...In the short amount of time left, I think there is still more to come in that regard regarding how Jacob feels about the whole situation big and small picture wise.

I don't think the show wants us to see Jacob as a purely good person at all. And being able to empathize with the MIB just means he's a good villain. BTW, at what point do we start making sure that Jimmy also watches the epilogue once he's seen the finale?

Thomas Hansen

I watched this episode 5 times before episode 16, because it's just full of information and things you missed the first time around.

Daniel Gray

Yes you're absolutely right. I've been watching all these reactions but it has been 3 years since I've sat and watched the entire show. For the longest time I would have considered myself an expert with this show, but I'm kind of happy I got this wrong, it means I'm forgetting things! :)

Mark McKeown

Yeah I feel like MIB and Jacob fell into their roles as "bad guy" and "good guy" not so much bc one was so much good than the other on the good vs. evil scale but MIB just so happened to be the one that OG smokey felt could be of better use to it probably bc of his more rebellious/curious spirit which is way easier to exploit than Jacob's more cautious nature.

Do you know what you’re gonna do for the finale yet?

Light Yagami

It's possible Mother (not the biological one) was some kind of a smoke monster too, she seemed to have knowledge of what happens when you entered that cave.

Mark McKeown

A bold move to have an episode with none of the main cast so close to the finale.

Mark McKeown

Really hope you'll do a a bunch of parts for the finale. So many good moments that wouldn't fit into two parts.

"For those who don't understand, what happened here was the "lich king effect". For those familiar with World of Warcraft, it can be said that the original smoke monster, from ancient egyptian times, was trapped on the island - for some not need reason for the plot -, and it wanted to leave in order to 'spread'. It has planned to, somehow, use MiB since he appeared to him as his original mother, convincing him to live to the other people, even though Smokey didn't have much clear how he would do it (the opposite of what he did with Locke! A whole gear system that started on Walkabout, with the 'scan'). We can also argue that Smokey already exists because that is how 'mother' killed the other people: By summonning Smokey, like Ben did against Keamy on 'The shape of things to come' (some may understand by this that Smokey was there to serve to the protector in some way. Maybe even helping to keep the source safe!). When we reach the freeing scene, MiB and the original smoke monster (some also consider him the devil) merge, creating a new entity all together, while also freeing the monster, however still keeping parts of MiB there, like his feelings and memories. Also, that is why It can't harm Jacob! Mother have made so MiB and Jacob couldn't harm each other, and, therefore, it was also the case with smokey. It's literally 2 people in 1 body, just like 'the lich king in WoW', that has the Nerzhul evil spirit, and Arthas, all together, forming someone new entirely." -Some guy, on a random page

hasp

So many episodes deserve a full reaction, and it would be AMAZING, but Jimmy has his system and I guess it works.

Mark McKeown

Please post full reaction for finale if you can ! We’d appreciate it greatly
